About Trading Places

Our convenient location, distinctive colour and style all make Trading Places a landmark in Smithfield. We offer quality, value for money bed and breakfast accommodation in this little village - one of the few left in the Free State with a genuine frontier atmosphere. Rich, plum-coloured walls form a welcoming backdrop to the comfortable, en-suite double and family accommodation. But it's not just the accommodation, secure parking and meals that have guests coming back - they also enjoy our many activities. We have well-kept birding and indigenous plant secrets we can share with you; little-known Anglo-Boer War battle sites; the Caledon Museum; game viewing; San rock painting and a charming country golf course.

The mountain bike and road cycling here is superb; there's canoeing on the village dam as well as hiking, tennis, bowls. Geo-cachers are well catered for with intriguing caches around the village, and even one in our garden. Your well-behaved dogs are welcome (by prior arrangement) - they are sure to think they are in heaven when they go walking with you in the veld.

And if all you want to do is read or sleep, Trading Places is your ideal destination with good books, comfortable chairs and beds, uninterrupted views of the mountain, silence, sunsets that leave you breathless and a spectacular starry night sky.

Note – our rate of R180 per person sharing is for accommodation only.

Breakfast is available by arrangement.

A single supplement may be charged at our discretion.

Children under 13 are charged at half the adult fare. Contact us about a rate for babies and toddlers.
